Yinka Shonibare (artist)
About
Yinka Shonibare was born in 1962 in London to Nigerian parents. Shonibare grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, and later returned to England to study Fine Art at Byam Shaw College of Art (now Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design). He received his MFA at Goldsmiths College, graduating as part of the “Young British Artists” generation. During the 1990s, Shonibare became known for his wry post-colonial commentary through his sculptural scenes of headless figures dressed in 19th-century-period outfits, typically shown at leisure or play.
