Students will use a visual thinking protocol to analyze San Lazaro (O Yo Soy La Ruta) by Jose Bedia and consider how he visually communicates layers of meaning in a work of art. Students will learn about the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and illustrate one of its articles to convey its complex meaning.
Students will analyze the impact of world and cultural events on individual and perceived identity as portrayed in self-portraits. Students will create dramatic monologues as a way to unpack Silence of Thought #2 by Lalla Essaydi and explore and analyze world and cultural events related to the time period. Students will then create self-portraits that reflect how historical and cultural events have impacted their lives.
Students will study the False Door of Ni-ankh-Snefru. Using design elements they will create a false door for their own imaginary tomb. Students will create a monologue of their offering formula and present it to the class.
Students will use Molenaer’s The Dentist to compare dental health in the past to dental health today. They will learn that taking care of their teeth and visiting the dentist will lead to good dental health. Students will reimagine The Dentist if it were painted today and create public health projects to encourage K-3 students to practice good dental hygiene.
Students will delve into Hans Thoma’s Wondrous Birds to discover an aerial perspective and learn to see more deeply. Using dance, English language arts, science, theatre arts, visual arts, and poetry, they will explore landforms and bodies of water from a bird’s-eye view.
