About

Lamidi Olonade Fakeye stands between traditional Yoruba artists and academically trained Nigerian artists who are part of the international contemporary art world. A member of a long line of Yoruba wood carvers, Fakeye began his career by serving a three-year apprenticeship in carving. After additional training and extensive travel, He developed a distinctive, personal interpretation of Yoruba woodcarving grounded in traditional techniques and materials. In his works decorative passages on items of clothing or coiffures are set off against the simplified anatomical forms and broad facial planes of the figures.
