André Leon Gray (artist)
About
Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, André Leon Gray is a self-trained artist who focuses on mixed media installations and assemblages. Much of Gray’s work consists of commonplace and found objects such as children’s toys, wooden chairs, and picture frames. Through these objects, he illustrates the lived experiences of African-Americans, while critiquing the societal and political structures have long enforced their marginalization. Gray refers to his works as “eye gumbo,” which he defines as, “A visual meal for the mind, thickened with a roux of black culture, marinated in social commentary and seasoned with consciousness.”
