About

The silversmith Martin Breuer was a native of Breslau and in 1705 became master in Augsburg, then one of the great centers of fine metalwork in Europe. He died in 1751. Breuer was not Jewish: in the 18th century, Jews were excluded from the fine arts guilds in Germany and in most of Europe. Though several hevra kadisha beakers of similar form and decoration were produced by silversmiths in Frankfurt, the Darmstadt beaker is the only one known from Augsburg.
