Artists in Process – Student HOME Page

AIP Home Page

Welcome!!!

You are part of a cohort of high school students across North Carolina participating in Artists in Process. In this program you will do the following:

  • Explore artists from the NCMA collection connected to the BIG CONCEPT – PLACE

  • Choose works for inspiration and develop ideas in a process journal around the concept

  • Participate in a field trip (virtually or in person) for more inspiration

  • Create work related to the theme, with the option of submitting to NCMA’s juried art exhibition

The program explores these key questions:

  • How do artists arrive at their final work?

  • What is the process an artist goes through to develop, document, and refine their ideas?

  • How do artists translate these ideas into a work of art or a body of work?

BIG Concept

This year’s concept focus is: PLACE

The concept of place in contemporary art explores how environments shape identity, memory, and experience. Artists investigate place as more than a physical location. A place can be a city, landscape, home, or symbolic site connected to important events or collective identity. Through visual art, they explore how environments carry meaning shaped by culture, memory, identity, and social experience.

BIG Questions

  • How can artists visually communicate the meaning of a place?

  • How do artists represent place beyond a physical location?

  • How does place influence identity, memory, and belonging?

  • How do artists critique or reinterpret social, political, or environmental spaces?

  • How do changing environments, technology, and globalization influence our understanding and perspectives of place?

  • How can artists critique or challenge social, political, or environmental issues connected to place?
