Hofmann was a German-born American painter whose work influenced the Abstract Expressionism movement. He began as a representational artist and later moved into complete abstraction. He is known for his art and for being an influential teacher. He opened an art school in Germany and two art schools in the United States. He developed an artistic approach and theory that he called “push and pull,” which he described as interdependent relationships between form, color, and space.
