Vera Lutter (artist)
About
Born in Kaiserslautern, Germany, in 1960, Lutter trained as a sculptor at the Munich Academy, a school where Conceptual art was the presiding spirit; she received a diploma in fine arts in 1990. Uncertain how to continue with sculpting, she found her way to New York and a position at the School of Visual Arts. Her first apartment in the city was a twenty-seventh-floor loft whose space and the light that flooded it inspired her first pinhole-camera experiments. In the following years, she refined and expanded her technique. Rodney Graham and Vera Lutter: Time Traced, at Dia Center for the Arts (1999-2000) was important in helping establish her reputation, as was inclusion in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. Lutter, based in New York, has shown her work all over this country and in Europe and is represented in a growing number of museums. For more information: http://veralutter.net
