Studio Workshop: Paint Like an Egyptian (two-part virtual class) (event)

Ancient Egyptians greatly enlarged the repertoire of materials available to artists and created stunning paintings that still vibrate with color today. Join NCMA conservator Perry Hurt and artist Patricia Savage for a series of virtual workshops. Through presentations and demos, they show how ancient Egyptian materials were used and how they might be adapted for contemporary studio practice. Students will create their own paintings and learn about pigments, brushes, and surfaces.

This virtual workshop consists of two 90-minute Zoom sessions (Saturdays, January 9 and 16, 1:30–3 pm each day). All skill levels welcome; most appropriate for age 16 and up.

Materials needed

Collect your own or find all supplies needed at Jerry’s Artarama.

• Flower paint palette, plastic or porcelain
• Winsor and Newton Cotman synthetic watercolor brush series 111; # 8 round, # 1 round, Jerry’s Artarama
• String for grid and dry red pigment for creating grid

• Clay from your own yard, grind with mortar and pestle, strain out small rock

• Small container of thin cotton string
• Sennelier 5-pack egg tempera paint. Students may also use watercolor and gouache (no acrylic or oils).
