Artistic Media and Processes 

In this VFT, students will explore how artists use their media and/or processes to tell their stories.  Choose from the topics below or sign up for multiple VFTs.

Photography as Activism, for grades 9-12

Students will explore photographs from the NCMA’s permanent collection and discover how each artist uses the media to advocate for political and/or social change. 

Selfies & Usies, for grades 6-12

What can you tell about a person just by the way they present themselves visually?  While exploring historical and contemporary portraits from the NCMA’s permanent collection, and what artists and sitters choose to present in these portraits, students will ‘read’ about each sitter’s revealed identity.

The Power of the Artist, for grades 9-12

Students will explore works of art in the NCMA’s permanent collection from around the globe in which artists assert their own agency.  Together, students will discover how artists have the power to control what their viewers see through the artists’ experimentation with and control over materials, processes, and placement within a composition.
