Elliott Daingerfield grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and later maintained a summer home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. In contrast to earlier generations of landscape painters, he adopted the practice of painting from memory rather than from direct observation, believing art acquired a heightened spirituality when mediated by the imagination. Such qualities are everywhere apparent in The Grand Canyon, one of his most celebrated works.
