An Artist’s Power

Students will explore works of art from the Museum’s permanent collection from around the globe in which artists assert their own power to control what viewers see through deliberate choices in materials, processes, and placement within a composition.

Students will explore photographs from the Museum’s permanent collection and discover how each artist uses the media to advocate for political and/or social change.

Selfies and Usies

What can you tell about a person just by the way they present themselves visually? While exploring historical and contemporary portraits from the Museum’s permanent collection, and what artists and sitters choose to present in these portraits, students will “read” the stories the artists are telling about the sitters.

Students will look carefully at objects from the Museum’s permanent collection to explore how artists use the principle of focal point. Students will discover how artists emphasize their works’ most important part(s) through placement, contrast, and converging lines to move the viewers’ eyes where they want them to go.

The Stories Art Can Tell …

In this Virtual Field Trip, students will explore three works of art from the Museum’s permanent collection featuring artists from groups that museums have historically excluded or under-represented. Through reading the works by different featured artist groups, students will practice the social emotional learning competencies of self and social-awareness and relationship skills.

Students will “read” works of art from the permanent collection by African American artists and explore how each artist tells a story of Black History through their unique use of art elements and media.
