Beginning / Middle / End: Storytelling with a Work of Art (Quick Tip)

Begin by looking at the work of art to observe the details as a whole group. Select several students to pose to re-create the work of art, as in a Tableau Vivant. You can use this experience to get the students to notice specific details about the figures — postures, expressions, and ways they are positioned in relation to one another. Refrain from developing interpretation and story at this time.

Next, have students get into pairs, and pass out the storytelling handout. Students should discuss with their partners and decide what they think happened before and after this work of art. Students may choose to draw or write their ideas on the handout provided.
